How to Easily Remodel a Kitchen on a Budget: Before & After

Do you hate your kitchen? Do you need or want a quick remodel? Well, we bought a beautiful house but the only thing I hated was that it came with white cabinets! I hate white cabinets, so the very first thing I wanted out was the white! So our first DIY project was to tackle the kitchen.  We are so by far not painters! But we are excited to share this kitchen makeover with you! Below are the results and we will show you step-by-step how we repainted our kitchen using Rustoleum’s Transformation Kit. The items you will  need are:

Rustoleum’s Transoformation Kit– (This kit only covers 100 sq ft. so you may need 2 packs depending on how big your kitchen is)

Paint Brushes

Paint Trays

Painter’s Tape

Before:

To start, remove all the doors and drawers from the frame as well as remove all the hardware from them. We laid the doors out in the garage and kept the drawers inside. We numbered each door and put its hardware in a labeled cup. Using the deglosser from the kit, scrub the doors, drawers, and frame. This is to take the shine off so that the base coat can adhere well.  Let dry for an hour.

Step 2 is applying the base coat. Since I wanted the backs of the doors painted as well, I started with the backs.  Apply the first coat and allow to dry for 2-3 hours before applying the second coat. After the backs are dry, flip and repeat first and second coats on the fronts, remembering to let each coat completely dry for 2-3 hours before applying the next coat.

You will also degloss and paint 2 coats of the base coat on the frame as well.

The next step is the optional glaze. The glaze is a nice add to give the paint a wood finish.

Here’s the brown paint dry unglazed vs a glazed door. Notice the difference. The door doesn’t just look like brown paint.

The next step is to then apply the glaze.  Wipe away as much glaze as you like to create the look you want using the supplied cloths.  I wanted the cabinets darker with a deeper wood tone so I left more glaze on.  Allow the glaze to dry 12 hours before applying the final clear coat. After the glaze has dried, apply the protective clear coat. Allow the clear coat to dry for at least 12 hours before putting the hardware back on  and 24 hours before full function of the kitchen.
